Future Light: Pauline Boudry / Renate Lorenz. LOVING, REPEATING

Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz, Opaque, Performance: Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Werner Hirsch, Courtesy of Marcelle Alix and Ellen de Bruijne Projects

An exhibition by Kunsthalle Wien as part of Future Light

At Kunsthalle Wien, Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz are presenting three film-based works. The films are highly staged scenarios where the past is recreated for a future use and new desires take shape. Amid glitter, curtains, camouflage patterns, impressive wigs, and musical interaction, encounters take place between characters who are deliberately difficult to categorize. Together this creates a backstage scenario, where the visitors are drawn into trans-temporal space and time. Opacity is the concept that connects the films aesthetically and politically, being displayed in various modalities by the films themselves as well as their installation in space and the way they interact with sculptural objects.

Boudry and Lorenz live in Berlin and Vienna and have worked together since 2007. Their recent film installations step in and out of suppressed or illegible moments, staging the actions of individuals and groups living— indeed, thriving—in defiance of normality, the law, and economics. They produce performances for the camera, making use of a dense net of references to experimental film, the history of photography, and underground (drag) performance. The performers are choreographers, artists, and musicians. Recent retrospectives and solo exhibitions have included Patriarchal Poetry (Badischer Kunstverein, 2013), Aftershow (CAPC, Bordeaux, 2013), Toxic Play in Two Acts (South London Gallery, 2012), and Contagieux! Rapports contre la normalité (Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, 2010). The artists recently published the book Aftershow (Sternberg Press, 2014).
